Etched to the 22nd Middlesex Volunteer Rifles and with the owner / officer’s initials “FHW” also to the blade. The maker’s / retailer’s details are so worn that they are illegible. The original leather scabbard is of late Victorian design.
The 32 1/8 inch blade has a steady patina throughout and wear; the etching is barely visible in places. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with age and rust patches in nonetheless good for its age. The fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are both good. The field service leather scabbard is aged and scuffed though is sound to good for age. The sword sheathes and draws well.
