Unmarked, so how do we know it is a United States War of 1812 Naval Cutlass? The pineapple grip is early 1800’s (both American and British used them). The grip and the bowl guard are not British (or Prussian) as the grip’s groves are not well defined or deep, and the bowl guard is not up to the standard of metal or workmanship employed by the British and Prussians. The British had bowl guard cutlasses but not until the 1840’s, and by then the grips were ribbed, not pineapple. The US was caught out by the war of 1812 and small arms were in extremely short supply, so production was rushed, models not set in stone, and markings were not critical. Most likely a British war trophy.

The 28 1/4 inch blade is in good condition but for a couple of old / period nicks (not recent as no burring and the blade’s patina extends into the nicks). The hilt and grip with a little movement on the blade. The comparatively rudimentary hilt / guard is in good condition (some minor dents / bending which appear to be manufacturing not battle made). The grip is good.
