Arthur Weston Reed served in both WW1 with the East Surrey Regiment and WW2 with The Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME). Included are a folder containing his papers and photos, including his story of his life and service in WW1. In WW2, then Lieut Col Arthur Weston Reed was Colonel in Chief for “REME Services – Repair & Recovery” which was a vital part of Operation Overlord (The D-Day Landings), repairing and waterproofing Allied tanks and other vehicles (A screen grab from the now removed Spinks sale of his medals and other is not included in the documents in the file we have, the three Spinks photos are in the extra digital images you can request, gives some detail of this). There are quite a few photos and documents in the file that come with this sword.
The 33 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt (no maker’s or retailer’s markings but a high quality sword). The steel guard / hilt is in very good condition, some cleaning abrasion. The fishskin grip is a little worn and faded but is very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The original sword knot is a little tatty / worn / grubby but good. The field service leather scabbard is good but has scuffs, etc., especially around the chape. The sword sheathes and draws well.
This is a very nice sword, once the former property of an important officer. Well worth was £? (too late, now sold). Please ask for item reference Y55. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1457-101x23x21 (2.751).
