Details of HMS Undine are here, that was damaged and scuttled after losing her sonar. This sword would have been purchased for the 1st January 1939 promotion from 2nd Lieutenant to Lieutenant of J S Stewart. So this sword sat at home while he was a POW.
The 31 1/4 inch blade in very good condition and superb etching, marked to Gieves (Wilkinson Sword made their swords), firm in the hilt. Hilt with gilt remaining, white fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings in very good order. Original sword knot good. The scabbard mostly good but a small gouge down one side (can only be seen when view scabbard side on) and the fittings a bit loose (can be glued, which is what the maker did originally). The leather all weather bag overall good, but some age. The inner roeskin bag in good order though a little grubby. The sword sheathes and draws well. The folding guard section works well and locates onto the scabbard retaining pin as it should.
