Probably mid WW1 as there is no maker’s or retailer’s name etched to the ricasso. No officer’s name engraved to the folding guard either. Speaks of late 1916 to mid 1918. These black fishskin gripped junior officer swords are much scarcer then the white fishskin regular (lieutenant +) officer swords.
The 31 1/4 inch blade has very feint etching (it was always feint) and is firm in the hilt. The hilt very good, as are the black fishskin grip and associated grip wire bindings. The leather and brass scabbard is very aged / worn, with leather deterioration and permanent black spot stains but is sound to good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A very honest example at an honestly good price, was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Y39. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1451-118x15x14 (1.811).
