Etched to the 5th Company of the 6th Battalion of the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders; we understand this company were part of the British Expeditionary Force in 1940, were therefore at Dunkirk and after the Allied Landings in Normandy were often nicknamed the “D-Day Dodgers”. Alkit, an outfitter, clearly had an association with the regiment as this is not the first Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders sword of theirs that we have experienced. Alkit sold Wilkinson Swords with Alkit’s name on them. As the blade is etched specifically to the 5/6, it is probable the sword was owned by a senior / the commanding officer.
The 33 inch blade is in good condition, some age / wear but not much. Blade firm in the hilt. The basket hilt with some tarnish / age and a few small rust spots is nonetheless good. The scarlet red hilt liner and tassel are aged and worn; the later almost completely gone. The faux fishskin grip speaks of WW2 and, along with its associated grip wire bindings are both in good condition. The leather and steel fittings scabbard is in overall good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A real collector’s piece in well above average condition, just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Y34. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1433-115x28x27 (3.01).
