It is a very high quality 19C sword complete with owner’s family’s crest to the well etched blade, but it may not be a Wilkinson as there is no serial number. Back in Victorian times, an officer would go to a military outfitters for his needs; uniform, belts, cap, boots, ribbons and sword. If an officer went to an outfitter with no contract with Wilkinson Sword and asked specifically for one, the outfitter would sometimes go to his contracted sword maker who had a Wilkinson logo template to etch on in the belief there was absolutely nothing wrong with that. This could be such a sword but, make no mistake, it is a quality sword by a quality maker fitting for a Wilkinson. The quality is such it is impossible for us to tell. We only mention the possibility it was not made by Wilkinson as this did happen! And we can not in all good conscious sell it as a true Wilkinson, although the quality indicates it is, simply because it has no serial number.
The 34 inch dress weight (just under 1″ width at ricasso) blade is supremely well etched and in exceptional condition, plus firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard very good, as are the fishskin grip and associated grip wire bindings. The steel scabbard in very good condition, a small ding one side. The sword sheathes and draws well.
In this superb condition and with a family crest to the blade, if this sword had a serial number, it would sell for was £? (too late, now sold) to £1000. Grab it quick, just £600. Please quote item reference Y33. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1421-118x15x14 (Y33).
