Inside of hilt engraved “Presented to Captain J. W. Davis 3/4 East York Regiment by the officers of the 2nd batt. E. Yorks. Vol. Brigade 1915″. A Sheffield made (of course) sword by Wm Hutton & Sons Ltd. Captain Davis was forced to retire from service through ill health as a result of his tenure in the Machine Gun Corps in the last year of World War One.
The 32 1/2 inch blade with typical Sheffield light grey etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The grand / large typical Sheffield stainless steel guard / hilt in very good condition. The fishskin grip has lost a lot of colour (black) (can be “restored” with good boot polish); the twisted grip wire bindings in good condition. The leather field service scabbard with scuffs and wear is nonetheless good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
