Most likely a British soldier’s war trophy from Waterloo. Dated May 1813. Multiple nicks to forward and mid cutting edge.
The 34 inch blade is in good though worn condition and a number of nicks to the cutting edge (maybe period, maybe later, hard to tell – more than normal which may simply mean it saw a lot of combat). Blade firm in the hilt. The brass hilt in good condition. The original leather grip has wear and a small scuff, but is in good condition and both brass “olives” are present and correct. The heavy steel scabbard is in good condition. The saber sheathes and draws well; there is a small gap between the hilt / guard and the top of the scabbard when fully sheathed only because the original scabbard buffer (leather blade washer) is absent.
These Waterloo French light cavalry sabres are increasingly difficult to source. This one is a very good example at below average pricing, so grab it quick at just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item ref X16. Box 1248-121x19x16 (3.390).
