Serial number 64620 for 1934, his initials “D. J. B.” are etched to blade and embossed on all weather bag. The Wilkinson sales ledger confirms this is the sword of then Lieutenant Bannister. This would have been his sword throughout WW2 during which he fought with such valor so as to be awarded the Military Cross.
The 32 3/8 inch blade is in very good condition save for a couple of small patina patches along the back edge. The blade and probably hilt have been replated at some stage but professionally done (etching still quite clear and they did not plate the brass proof slug), probably by the original owner. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard in very good condition. The black fishskin grip very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings (top most lesser strand slightly astray). Original sword knot aged but sound. Leather field scabbard in good condition, some wear / scuffs etc. The all weather carry case with age but sound, the fastening buckle strap is coming apart. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Lovely, well above average example. A stonking bargain with research potential at just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number W66. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 1191-101x18x16 (2.322).
