Welsh Guards swords are scarce as they were only founded in 1915 as a single battalion regiment. With no retailer’s name to the ricasso and no battle honours to the blade, this sword is almost definitely World War One.
The 32 1/4 has rust areas especially towards the point end but most etching is clear and the whole thing is firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with an even light rusting is sound. The fishskin grip with some blotching / staining and shrinkage but sound. The twisted grip wire bindings a little wayward in places but sound. The steel scabbard is good overall. The sword sheathes and draws a little loosely indicating the internal wooden slats are not great.
A scarce sword at a fair price: was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number V77. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Tube 1059-105×16 (2.530).
