This is a WW1 Prussian M-89 NCO’s sword with the Kaiser’s grip lozenge removed and a Totenkopf added. This was done by officers of the German Freikorps after Germany’s defeat. Prior to 1919, the Totenkopf was only used by cavalry regiments. It was only next used by Germany infantry of the Nazi Stabswache / Schutzstaffel (SS).

The 29 3/4 inch double fullered plain blade (no maker’s mark) is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt with some scuffs and dings but generally very good; the folding guard section works well. The faux ebony grip and its twisted grip wire bindings are very good. The steel scabbard has been painted black (looks period) and is in very good shape. The sword draws and sheaths well, if a little loosely. The notches cut into the knucklebow may well have an ominous / bloody / murderous connotation.

A rare frightful sword from a murderous paramilitary; you either love it or hate it. In any event, to own it you must have was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number V51. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 0994-101x19x16 (1.705).
