Serial number 12421 to the spine. Confirmed on the Wilkinson sales ledger as having been sold to J E Pawson Esquire 9th March 1864. John Ellerton Pawson was a member of the wealthy fabric warehousemen family business, Messrs. Pawson & Co. of St. Paul’s Churchyard in London (photo further below), and the blade bears the Pawson family crest “On A Mount Vert, The Sun In His Splendour”, plus Captain Pawson’s initials, “J E P”.
The 32 1/4 inch dress weight (3/4 inch at forte / ricasso) is supremely well etched and in very good condition for its age. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with steady pleasing patina is in good shape, the fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings also good save for a small “moth ball” (wear) patch. The steel scabbard has much patina and a small kink one side but is otherwise good. The sword sheathes an draws well enough if a little loosely.
A great and rare sword with full provenance for a very interesting officer. Yours for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference T66. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 0811-1m (1.562).
