Serial number 54607 for 1917 sold to a H W Sanderson of the Scots Guards on 11/1/1917, with the initials “H. W. S.” and Grenadier Guards flaming bomb and pre-WW1 battle honours etched to the blade; Second Lieutenant Sanderson served on the front line and had a connection to the Scots Guards (we believe he earned his commission with them but then transferred to the Grenadier Guards). The sword has a dress weight slender blade as officers never needed fighting swords in the 20th Century, instead carrying revolvers / pistols as their side arms. The scabbard is full width, as was common, to give the impression it housed a fighting sword.
The 31 3/4 inch well etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel hilt / guard with George V’s initials to a Grenadier Guards flaming bomb badge is in very good condition. The black fishskin grip is a little worn / faded, but good. The silver metal twisted grip wire bindings have lost some turns of lesser strands but are still good generally. The leather field service scabbard has age and scuffs but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws a little loosely but is tight enough when fully sheathed.
