Owner’s / officer’s initials “J. C.” to the blade, serial number 101826 to the spine, VR royal cypher and Victorian crown to the blade plus Edward 7th to the Grenadier Guard’s flying bomb to the guard, the sword either dates to 1901 or the officer had the VR blade re-hilted when EVII came to the throne. I n either event, the original / owner officer could well be identified.
Etched at the ricasso to maker “S.J. PILLIN, 31 GERRARD ST., LONDON W.”, of regulation pattern, with bright tapering fullered blade etched over both sides of the forte (old light rust patination) with battle honours, crowned Grenadier Guards regimental badge, circular copper alloy ‘PROVED’ stamp centred on a star, steel hilt, incorporating pierced flaming grenade engraved with ‘ERVII’ cypher above Union foliage to the cartouche, and ribbed ray/fish skin covered grip, in its steel scabbard with two suspension rings.
The well etched 32 1/4 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The steel guard / hilt with steady light pitting and patina is in good condition otherwise. The fish/ray skin grip has age and wear but good; missing its twisted grip wire bindings. The steel scabbard has a steady light pitting, etc. but is good still. The sword sheathes and draws well.
