VGC = Very Good Condition
CAVEAT: This 1857p Victorian Scottish Infantry Field Officer’s Broadsword does not easily fully sheath; there is an obstruction or leather shrinkage related tightness. We believe it is the original scabbard. Tapping the chape while upside down (to see if an obstruction comes out) and / or greasing the tip section may resolve this.
Etched at the ricasso to quality maker “ROBT. MOLE & SONS, BIRMINGHAM, MAKERS TO THE WAR & INDIA OFFICE”. Circa 1880.
The well etched 32 1/2 inch blade has some patina / age / wear but not much; it is in in very good / well above average condition, plus form in the hilt. The steel pierced acanthus-leaf guard / hilt has age / wear but remains good to very good for its age. The black fishskin grip is very good for its age; the associated silver metal twisted grip wire bindings are good but for a couple of turns where a lesser strand is a little wayward through wear. The leather with steel ball chape scabbard has age / wear but is still good. The sword does not fully sheath into the scabbard.
A scarce, sought after 1857 pattern Victorian Scottish Infantry Field Officer’s Sword in well above average condition for just £875. Please quote item reference AJ72. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
