Scabbard as seen / found, indicating a long harsh service life. This is a plain bladed version of the 1857p Royal Engineers Officer’s Sword, likely for a NCO. No maker’s / retailer’s details. A somewhat rudimentary brass proof “slug”; does not give any clue as to the maker.
The 34 1/2 inch plain blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass acanthus foliage/scrollwork guard / hilt is in very good condition with an attractive aged patina; the back piece very slightly curved outward. The fishskin grip is in good condition, some wear; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are also good. The leather field service scabbard is very worn and aged; leather chape missing, suspension strap gone, multiple scrapes, etc. The sword sheathes and draws well.
