関住生駒義国作 Seki Ju Ikoma Yoshikuni Saku (resident of Seki, Ikoma Yoshikuni, made this).
Yoshikuni (義国), Shōwa (昭和, 1926-1989), Gifu –“Yoshikuni” (義国), real name Ikoma Yoshiichi (生駒芳一)
No Seki or Showa stamps. This is a traditionally forged Gendaito shin gunto as can be clearly seen from the hamon.
The sword knot indicates this sword was taken off the Japanese army officer during / at the end of WW2 as mass surrender swords had their knots removed by the officers to preserve some honour. The saya / scabbard is a field service version, not a dress version, so it was carried in combat.
The 25 inch nagasa (cutting edge section excluding habaki) katana length traditionally forged blade is in very good condition, so scuffs / wear / age. Everything firm. The hilt’s / tsuka’s “furniture” (tsuba, menuki, rayskin, etc.) is aged but good. The leather bound saya has age / wear but remains good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A great gendaito WW2 Japanese army officer’s shin gunto katana for only £1200. Please quote items reference AJ58. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box?
