Etched as the ricasso forte to high quality retiler “Standen & Co, 16 Waterloo Place, Pall Mall, London, S.W.” with a “P” proof stud to the obverse indicating the sword was made for them by Pillin. The sword is also etched with the officer’s initials, “R S”. Circa 1890, the officer is eminently researchable.
NB The hilt has a slight milky tarnish. To remove the tarnish, you would be advised to carefully unscrew the pommel and remove the hilt or, at the very least, remove the holt liner and use a quality metal finishing cream such as Simichrome.
The 32 3/8 inch blade, etched with the badge of The Black Watch Royal Highlanders, Sphinx / Egypt Battle Honour, VR Royal Cypher, etc., is in as new condition and firm in the hilt. The plated steel basket hilt is in very good condition, albeit with a light milky tarnish. The royal blue edged hilt lining is aged / worn but still good, though only a trace of the royal blue edging remains. The fishskin gtip has a little wear but remains very good, so too the twisted grip wire bindings. The scarlet tassle is aged but sound. The plated steel dress scabbard is in very good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
