Marked (inscribed) by French state sword maker Klingenthal to the blade’s spine, including the date “8bre 1814” for August 1814; the date confirmed by the three poinçons (inspection stamps) to the blade’s forte (see French sword poinçons here). This sword is guaranteed to be authentic (reproductions typically have only 2 poinçons and lazer cut spine dates). Sword rack number 25 (former crossed out rack number 1548, suggesting an existing / older hilt receiving a new replacement blade in 1814), scabbard rack number 1224 (the mismatch implying a battlefield pick up; see bellow).
Battle of Waterloo indicators;
a) Spear pointed blade (these blades were made as hatchet point but mostly field converted just before Waterloo to spear points for bettwer piecing ability)
b) No post 1815 markings / poinçons (swords that stayed in French service typically would be checked and marked so to the hilts).
c) Eleven grip turns (post 1815 grips, including replacement grips had 16+).
d) No m1816 conversion (the m1816 hilt has forward facing guard edges).
e) Purchased by us in the UK (has been in the UK for a long time, so is a Battlefirld pick up / war trophy).
f) Hilt / scabbard rack number mismatch / marriage. This shows the sword did not stay in French service, else the French would have corrected this. It also more than suggests the sword was a battlefield pick up (many Frnech cuirassiers dropped their swords whee they fell), then married to a suitable scabbard (which would still likely be on the horse, or dropped elsewhere).
The 37 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The heavy brass hilt / guard is very good but has an old sword nick to the edge plus some roughness damage to the lip. The original leather grip is in very very good condition, plus its twisted grip wire bindings are still present. The heavy steel scabbard is in very good condition; the sword sheathes and draws well.
