With thumb ring, this Sinclair / Dusak / Tessak dates to around 1620.
A legendary Scottish Sinclair Sword, actually a Northern European Tessak or Dussage, brought home to Scotland by a Scottish mercenary in the early 1600’s. These swords were used mercilessly by Scottish mercenaries in Ireland and Europe. For some reason in Victorian times, everyone was convinced to refer to them as Scottish Sinclair Swords, even though they were made in Europe, mostly in Solingen. Sinclair Swords had a variation of different shapes, despite common belief; See the photo at the bttom left of Royal Armouries’ article for one very similar.
The 32 7/8 inch blade is in aged condition, a slight bend towards the point, several small very old nicks to the cutting edge, with now inert rust pitting virtually throughout, yet is sound. Blade moves a bit in the hilt. The hilt has lost one of its extended quillons, plus has a cracked bar, plus has some distortion, but is sound. The grip has long lost its leather outer layer and acquired a few worm holes, but it quite sound. Scabbard long absent.
