Af = as found; the scabbard leather has broken just above the chape (repair means taking the chape off, gluing and tapeing the leather together, then replacing the chape back into position).
Etched on the blade to Ellyett of Portsea, a prominent cutler and naval outfitter based in Portsea (Portsmouth) during the mid-19th century.
No officer’s name engraved to the folding guard (normal for that period).
Note: this is very early Victorian due to the fact had a suspension frog button as well as suspension rings. Circa 1837.
The quill pointed 28 inch pipe back blade is in aged / worn but good condition (etching still visible) and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt in similar condition to the blade; the folding guard works well. The fishskin grip has a small ink spot to it and is generally a bit grubby from being held, but is otherwise very good for its age; the twisted grip wire bindings are good. The leather and brass fittings scabbard has that break just above the chape, but is otherwise good for its age. Taking care / account of the scabbard’s break, the sword sheaths and draws well.
A really early Victorian RN officer’s pipe back with the blade etching still clear for just £700! Please quote item reference AJ25. Further / full sized images available upon reuqest. Box 2284 99 x 13 x 13 (1.466).
