Then acting Captain Frederick Robert Joseph Mack was very very lucky; he was seconded to the Rear-Admiral / Vice Admiral Commanding the Battle Cruiser Squadron of HMS Hood, Renown and Warspite, and was serving aboard HMS Hood just before the famous Battle of the Denmark Strait on the 24th May 1941 when the German battleship Bismarck and the heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen sank the Hood. But he was transferred literally just before that event.
You can find Mack’s naval career here.
This sword, etched to famous retailer Gieves at the ricasso, was given its present flag officer’s (Admiral rank) scabbard with oak leaves fittings after the Hood was sunk, but the sword itself was with Mack while he was on HMS Hood.
The well etched 31 1/4 inch blade is in good condition for its age and the salt air, some wear / small patina patches, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard has lost its gilt finish but remains very good; the folding guard section, engraved “F R J Mack” works well and locates onto the scabbard’s retaining pin. The fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are good, some wear, etc. The original sword knot is frayed and worn, but sound. The leather with brass oak leaves fittings scabbard is in slightly aged but good condition. The sword shethes and draws well.
