Two mekugi-ana peg holes to the Nakago (tang), the earlier family blade was originally mounted in a civilian wakizashi.
This shin gunto has a silver mon to the kashira / pommel.
The 22 1/2 inch nagasa (cutting edge section excluding habaki) blade is in very good condition, some hamon showing. The tsuka (grip / hilt) and its fittings are in good order; a slight gap exists between those fittings. The saya securing mechanism works but the round raised end that locates inside the scabbard is absent, so the scabbard is not secured in place. The grip’s same (rayskin) and ito (bindings) are worn and aged (mostly due to period Japanese sweat and a tight grip). The sword sheathes and draws well.
