The British War Depatment’s Crown over 4 View (inspection) mark proves this scarce sabre was issued to a regiment, or more. Unfortunately, most of the regimental markings to the hilt / guard and scabbard have been rendered illegible by surface rust. Marked to quality / foremost Birmingham England sword maker Gill to the blade’s spine, what makes this 1796P stand out amongst others is the rare lyre shaped drag normally associated with heavy cavalry trooper’s swords.
The number “12” does however stand out clear still on the scabbard which presumably is for the 12th Royal Lancers, a highly regarded cavalry regiment, one befitting of such a special scabbard, who served with great distinction in both the Peninsular and 100 Days Wars, including at the Battle of Waterloo. Some signs of combat use to the blade commensurate with being the secondary weapon to a light / lancer cavalry trooper’s lance.
T|he period sharpened 32 1/4 inch blade is in overall good condition and firm in the hilt. The “stirrup” hilt / guard in slightly rusted yet good condition. The ribbed wooden grip has lost its leather surface and gained a couple of small age / dryness cracks, yet is good / in well above average condition. The steel scabbard has a steady light inert rust / patina, some small holes and a slight split towards the drag, but is sound / in above average condition. The saber draws and sheathes well.
