With Inniskilling Dragoons badge and owner’s / officer’s initials (likely) “C E S” to the blade, this is a rare sword with a well worn grip making it only “good condition” rather than “very good condition”. Serial number 1404 to the spine of the blade. Etched to retailer “Jones, Chalk & Dawson, Sackville St, London”; the “P” proof stud indicates this sword was likely made by quality sword maker Pillin. British 1887 pattern heavy cavalry officer’s sword with “honeysuckle” hilt / guard. Possibly the former property of Charles Edward Suffling.
The 35 1/2 inch well etched, well polished blade is in very good condition for its age and firm in the hilt. The plated steel hilt / guard is in overall good condition, though has some very light powder rust to the inside and slight wear marks and very small light rust freckles to the front. The fishskin grip is well worn through in places, suggesting a lot of use / being held firmly; the twisted grip wire bindings are good. Modern replacement sword knot. The plated steel scabbard has some small light rust freckles and a couple of dings but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
