VGC = Very Good Consition. Serial number 44663 for 1914. Initials “C I R” plus the badge of the 1st Kings Dragoon Guards etched to the blade. The Wilkinson sales ledger states that the sword was sold to one R. G. Fox on the 8th June 1914, 1912, so the blade’s initials are probably that of his sweetheart (research needed). There are records for this officer from 1908.
The 34 5/8 inch blade is well etched and in very good condition (some small discoloration patches, etc), plus firm in the hilt. The hilt / bowl guard is also very good. The fishskin leather grip is good but with the officer’s sweat and compression wear from his hand; the twisted grip wire bidings are good. The leather sword knot with age is still good. The plated steel scabbard (for ceremonial / dress use) is good but with some age and minor scuffs. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Exceptional WW1 1DG officer’s Wilkinson Sword with research begging to be done; an investment at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AI96. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2214 109 x 16 x 16 (2.55).
