The blade in English made. Both the English and Scots had and used horseman / cavalry swords like this circe 1730-1740. We are certain this is Scottish with an English blade due to the bespoke very square front guard (not typically English) and battle damage (we believe from musket shots). Marks around the blade’s forte may be remnants of maker marks or just damage / age.
The 33 1/4 inch blade has deep rust pitting towards the point and has musket ball type damage elsewhere, but is otherwise sound and firm in the hilt. The steel basket hilt / guard with horse reign gaps is in good condition. We are sure the blade is original to the hilt but it has been reseated to allow a replacement grip to be fitted. Later replacement grip aged but good. Scabbard absent.
A very evocative Culloden era basket hilt at a very low price, just £1650. Please quote item reference AI95. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2216 108 x 13 x 13 (1.42).
