Marked to state maker “Klingenthal” to the blade’s spine, plus the month October. The year is not clear, but has to be either 1812 or 1813 due to the blade forte’s poinçons (inspection stamps), a wreathed “B”, star over “K” and “L”; see here.
The blade has clearly been out of it original scabbard for some time given the (now cleaned) pitting around the point. This sword is most likely a British soldier’s battlefield pick up / war trophy due to this, plus a) the field modified point / tip (converted to spear point, done just before Waterloo), b) an absence of post 1815 poinçons to the hilt, c) the hilt has not been replaced with the m1816 (has forward pointing edges), d) the grip has not been replaced with an 1816+ version (21+ grip turns).
No scabbard. In the past our customers have reported that modern reproduction scabbards do fit with minor modifications to the internal throat (we do not supply these).
The plain 37 inch blade is in goog condition, save for the pitting, and firm in the hilt. The heavy brass guard is in good condition, as is the hilt generally. The original leather grip is good but some surface patches of wear / age; the twisted grip wire bindings are good. Scabbard absent.
An authentic Imperial French An XIII cuirassier trooper’s sword in good condition and with its grip wire bindings good and present; a great buy at £850. Please quote item reference AI90. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 2189 113 x 20 (2.221).
