No maker’s / retailer’s details tp the blade’s ricasso, so likely an end of war RN dirk; circa 1917. Initials engraved to the scabbard’s top locket are “G.H.C.S ‘R”.
The 18 inch blade with GV royal cypher and fouled anchor has a few inert cleaned rust pitting patches; firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt is very good; the scabbard retaining pin mechanism works well. The fishskin grip is a little worn and grubby but overall very good; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. Knot with some wear / age is quite good. The leather and gilt brass fittings scabbard has some small leather dings but is good; the dirk sheathes and draws well. The all weather carry bag is a little aged / worn but good.
A very nice Geroge 5th RN officer’s dirk ensemble with research potential, nicely priced at £575. Please quote item reference AI81. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2160 64 x 13 x 13 (1.127).
