Engraved to “C Gatey RN” on the folding guard section, Captain C. Gatey, C.B.E., A.D.C. served in the Royal Navy from the end of WW1, throughout WW2, the Korean War and beyond until he retired in 1956 (see images right) after commanding the Royal Naval Engineering College. The sword dates to around the early / mid 1930’s likely when he made Commander rank.
We cconsider the sword itself to be in parade ground condition, the scabbard may pass with some TLC, the sword knot is as seen (aged and frayed).
The well etched 31 3/8 inch blade in in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard very good with much gilt remaining and the folding guard section working. The fishskin grip is very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The original sword knot has age and fraying but is sound. The leather and gilt brass fittings scabbard has some age and wear to the leather but is nonetheless good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
