Dated 1861 (lst number only just visible to the naked eye) with “U S” to the forte (the obverse now blank / wear rubbed out). This saber is not one of the many ex stores 1865 dated swords which never saw action, but one that has seen active service with the Union cavalry.
Stamped large cursive / stylish “2” (for 2nd regiment) on the knucklebow and inside guard, plus (smaller) “41” (weapon / rack number) on the knucklebow and pommel. This means the saber was held by an enlisted cavalryman of the Union’s 2nd Cavalry Regiment which saw extensive action against the Confederate Army.
The grip, with bulbous middle (missed by replicas and post-era grip replacements) may likely have been replaced at the end of its service life.
The 34 1/4 inch blade has age, many spots / patches of light pitting / patina and a nick to the cutting edge but is otherwise good, and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard has a steady pleasing patina and remains good. The leather grip and twisted grip wire bindings are both very good. The steel scabbard has a couple of small dents and patina, but is very good for its age and service. The saber sheathes and draws well.
