Etched to retailer E .J. Whitaker, Miltary Rd, Chatham at the forte / ricasso, with the brass “H W” proof stud for Henry Wilkinson to the obverse, this sword was apparently made by Wilkinson Sword and the quality shows; Caveat: the blade has been professionally replated at some stage so the etching is subsequently feinter than usual. The folding guard has the original officer’s (or institution’s) initials “L E” engraved to the folding guard section, so their details may be researchable.
Generally, the condition of this sword is in formal use condition.
The 31 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition, though the etching a bit feint, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt retains much gilt and is very good; the folding guard section works well and locates on to the scabbard’s securing pin. The (possibly faux normally signalling mid / late WW2) fishskin grip is in very good condition, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The sword knot is fairly good, some fading and fraying. The leather and brass (some gilt remaining) scabbard is good, some small scuffs. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Very good condition quality sword, perhaps ideal for a serving Royal Naval officer, just £625. Please quote item reference AI59. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2092 103 x 17 x 17 (2.323).
