A scarce short 1821 pattern British Royal Artillery officer’s sword, this one a straight bladed version etched to the 1st Sussex Volunteer1s. There are now very feint / worn maker / retailer etched details also; these may help date the sword, which is mid Victorian, circa 1859 when that Royal Artillery unit was formed.

The 27 iinch blade has wear and some patina but is good and firm in the hilt. The steel 3 bar guard has a light pitting and patina but is sound and good. The fishskin grip with age / wear is nonetheless good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The steel scabbard is mostly good for its age but has lost its throat piece and has a slight split at that point. The sword sheathes and draws a little loosely.
Great example of the scarce short 1821p Royal Artillery officer’s sword in very good condition for its age; £600 to you. Please quote item reference AI57. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 2075 87 x 16 (1.411).
