The 1850P British Royal Engineer Driver’s sword is the same as the Prussian m1849 cavalry trooper’s sword, as the markings on this one attest. The crown W 50 mark to the spine is a Prussian date mark for 1850. The Prussian cavalry rejected the model and the British snapped them up via their agent in Liege (Belgium), hence the British crown over L view / proof mark to the forte. These swords were in service widely with mounted Royal Engineers throughout the Crimean War. The opposed double crows foot mark is the official British decommissioning mark. The S&K emblem is the maker’s mark for Schnitzler & Kirschbaum of Solingen.

The 34 1/2 inch blade is a little aged with small patina patches but remains in good condition and firm in the hilt. The impressive steel wide two bar guard / hilt is also very good. The ribbed leather grip is good, though a little aged and worn. The steel scabbard in good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
An impressive and scarce sword in great condition. Well worth £1425. Please quote item reference AI53. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2076 107 x 16 x 15 (2.41).
