One of, if not the most attractive pattern of British military swords with so called “acanthus” hilt, the 1857 pattern Royal Engineers officer’s sword. This one with the serial number 16928, dating the sword to 18th August 1870 (mid/late Victorian) when it was finished by Wilkinsons; sadly, the Wilkinson sales ledger is blank for this serial number, so the officer’s name is lost to the winds of time.
The well etched 32 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The stunning brass acanthus hilt / guard has really minor distortion (far less than normal for these decorative brass hilts), almost unnoticeable. The fishskin grip is a little age faded, but good; the associated twisted grip wire bindings are good. The brass scabbard (for a more senior officer) is a little aged (slight dulling / tarnish – easily brightened if desired) but very good (a very small ding one side). The sword sheathes and draws well.
A stunning Victorian British RE officer’s 1857 pattern sword in well above average condition and by Wilkinson, well worth was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote reference AI49. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2072 103 x 16 x 16 (2.258).
