Etched (feint) to Richards (military outfitters / tailors), this 1803 pattern British infantry officer’s sabre / sword has a post 1801 British Royal Coat of Arms, so is Napoleonic Wars era, plus a strung bugle over the Royal Cypher of the guard, so it was a rifle officer’s sword (within an infantry regiment); this confirmed also by the rifle officer’s blade size (28 1/2 inches).
The well etched 28 1/2 inch blade has plenty of stunning blue and gilt etch remaining and is firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt / guard is in good condition. The black fishskin grip with some age / wear is very good; the twisted grip wire bindings have lost a couple of turns and is a little wayward in places. The brass and black leather scabbard is very good for its 200 year old age but has shrunk a little (dryness shrinkage, as should be expected) so the sword sheathes and draws tightly.
Incredible looking Napoleonic Wars British infantry officer’s sabre / sword in very good condition and may well have been present at a famous battle (e.g. Waterloo). Affordably priced at was £?
