Blue and gilt etched blade engraved on the spine to “JJ Runkel Solingen”. Top scabbard locket engraved to “Griffin & Adams, Sword Cutlers to H. R. H. The Duke of Clarence, 76 Strand”; the Duke of Clarence being King William IV later on. Griffin & Adams bought blades from Runkel and cutled them into fine swords.
A fine Napoleonic British Light Cavalry General’s Sword / Sabre. The fine blue and gilt 1796 pattern light cavalry blade and part general’s boat shell guard, part light cavalry stirrup hilt equate to a very rare pattern of sabre indeed.

The 32 1/4 inch blade has wear (worn / faded etching) but is still good with worthwhile aaamounts of blue and gilt. Some patina / light rust patches. Blade firm in the hilt. The brass guard has lost its gilt but is very good; the brass hilt generally also good. The twisted wire grip is very good. Te scabbard leather is showing its age with a break (taped over), surface crazing, wear, fading and dry shrinkage; the sword therefore sheathes and draws very tightly, but having a complete 200+ year old scabbard in fair condition is a blessing / bonus.
We doubt you will ever get the chance to buy another of these, so £2250 is a great investment and who knows what stories this sword could tell! Please quote item reference AI44. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2023 107 x 16 x 15 (2.33).
