The authentic World War One HMS Malaya (Battleship) Royal Naval Officer’s Sword of Lieutenant Mackenzie Dallas (see also here). Blade etched at the forte / ricasso to military ourfitters “Alfred Shannon, 86 Fore Street, Devonport”. Quite a scarce sword in that it has George V’s royal cypher etched to the blade (most simply had the British Royal Coat of Arms). The first three digits on the blade’s serial number (144) showing indicate this sword came from a Cutler (sword makers who bought in their blades). The folding guard engraved “MACKENZIE DALLAS, R.N.”.
The 31 3/8 inch well etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt with some gilt remaining is in good condition but has a very slight kink / bend in it mid point (barely noticeable). The white fishskin grip a little grubby is very good besides, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The gilt brass and black leather scabbard is very good for 100+ years old, save for some age / wear edge fading of the leather. The folding guard section works well and locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A cracking, well above average condition WW1 RN battleship officer’s sword for a price that will not break the bank, £600. Please quote item reference AI41. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2003 100 x 17 x 18 (2.313).
