Mei: Yasutsugu oite Echizen saku kore
Read about the highly rated Yasutsugu school / generation blade makers of Echizen here and here.
Which generation of Yasutsugu is this blade by? We do not know, possibly 3rd generation (17th Century), but they sell for a lot of money at auction, e.g. at Christies; note the year, 1996 (a rare example and bound to have greatly appreciated in value). Assuming the auction value has doubled since then, and that specialist Nihonto dealers paper and polish their blades, it is quite likely this blade / katana would retail for around twenty thousand GBP.
Ours is not NBTHK / NTHK-NPO papered / certified; the certification process takes months (the blade must be polished by a master and then certified) and costs around fifteen hundred GBP in total.
The 28 3/4 inch nagasa (cutting edge section) blade is generally in good polish (very good condition), a tiny amount of ware, some scuffing and tends to pick up very small amounts (spots) of old packing grease from the inside of the scabbard (easily removed and does not damage blade). Clear hamon. Furniture (tsuka / hilt, saya / scabbard, etc.) generally aged / worn a little but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Rare to the market, a golden chance to buy a quality katana at below half auction price; was £? (too late, now sold). Please ask for item reference AI37. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2009 107 x 16 x 15 (2.177).
