Captain Charles Carpenter was the father of Alfred Francis Blakeney Carpenter VC (Victoria Cross) whose sword can be found here. We bought both swords at auction; the vendors being his family and selling a large quantity of their naval ancestors’ possessions, so the provenance is absolute.
The 30 5/8 inch blade is very aged / worn with plenty of patina, the etching only just visible but firm still in the hilt. The brass hilt is good and the folding section of the guard still works and locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard. The fishskin grip is a tad grubby but good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The remains of the sword knot (acorn absent) are worn and tatty. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is quite good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
