Engraved “S F Claxton” to the folding guard and with no maker’s / retaialer’s name etched to the blade (a sure sign the sword was made during World War Two, in a hurry to see service). Second Lieutenant Claxton was the Wireless and Telegraph officer on ships such as HMS Campbell (D60), a Scott-Class Destroyer Flotilla Leader.
This sword is in such good condition, it is clear it was not taken en board and begs the question what happened to 2nd Lieutenant Claxton? Did he survive the war to reunite with his sword?

The 31 1/4 inch blade is in very good, almost as new condition, with very few patina patches and the etching still very clear. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt very good with much if not nearly all gilt remaining; the folding guard section works well and locates properly onto the securing pin of the top scabbard locket as it should. The white fishsking grip and twisted grip wire bindings are all very good. The original sword knot a little grubby but still very good. The leather and gilt brass scabbard has a couple of very slight impressions to the leather but is also very good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
An absolute beauty / corker in every way. Don’t bite our hand off, at only was £? (too late, now sold) it won’t be ours for long! Please quote item reference AI11. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1910 98 x 13 x 11 (1.473)
