The iconic 1857 pattern Royal Engineers Officer’s Sword! This one a Victorian 1st Middlesex Engineer Volunteers Officers Presentation Sword, by quality maker FIRMIN & SONS LIMITED 153 STRAND LONDON, etched ‘PRESENTED TO SERGEANT BUGLER GLANVILLE 1ST MIDDx ENGINEER VOLs BY THE BANDMASTER & BUGLE BAND AS A MARK OF ESTEEM ON HIS PROMOTION TO THAT RANK DECEMBER 8th 1883.
The exceptionally well etched 32 3/4 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The stunning acanthus leaf brass guard has a pleasing steady aging / patina / tarnish that makes it look like ancient bronze (can be made golden bright with a good brass polish or left as it is) and is in very good condition. The fishskin grip with some age (light wear & fading) is good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The sword knot is a recent replacement. The period chemically browned steel scabbard is in good condition but for a small ding / kink. The sword sheathes and draws well.
This is a beautiful sword; the blade is virtually as new. Plenty of research potential too. All / just for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AI09. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1893 (1.593) 103 x 11 x 13.
