A genuine Klingenthal made An XIII Napoleonic / Imperial French Cuirassier trooper’s sword. OK, the Klingenthal inscription to the spine of the blade is feint, probably removed as the sword was likely made during Napoleon’s first exile (May 1814 to March 1815) and would have proclaimed “Royale” rather than “Imperial”. But there are enough left of the inspection stamps (the remnants of the poinçons of Borson and Bick) to determine it was made from August 1814 to May 1815; before the battle of Waterloo. We know this is a British war trophy (likely a battlefield pick up) courtesy of it having a spear pointed blade (regimentally field converted from its original hatchet point to increase piercing ability), having no post Waterloo poinçons, plus neither the grip nor the guard have been converted to 1816 versions.
The 36 1/4 inch blade is in very good condition, some patina patches, firm in the hilt. The iconic heavy brass guard is in good condition, some scrapes but not too many. The original leather grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings are good and a major plus just having them, especially the grip wire bindings which are normally absent. The original period chemically browned heavy steel scabbard is good, a little light rust pitting here and there does not detract. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
An impressive killing weapon as beautiful as it was deadly. This one is well above average and well worth the was £? (too late, now sold) price tag. Please quote item reference AH96. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1902 (3.760) 118 x 22 x 22.
