Percy blades are bulbous (the opposite of fullered) and were believed to be the best for fighting by many officers; whoever owned this sword originally paid quite handsomely more for the privaledge of owning it. Is it a fighting sword? Quite likely as it is plain bladed (no trace of any etching) and no brass proof slug to weaken the blade, plus the blade length is just 27 3/8 inches; more appropiate for close combat in restrictive places.
The top locket of the scabbard embossed with the cutler’s details under the Queen’s crown; “Fraser & David, Portmouth”, dating it from 1857 to 1890 (we believe circa 1865-1870).

The 27 3/8 inch blade has multiple patina and pitting patches (and the very point has made contact with something in the past), but is still good and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with Queens crown above fouled anchor to the cartouche is in good condition, with fair amounts of gilt remaining; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard as it should. The fishskin grip is a little grubby in places but very good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The original sword knot is aged and frayed but a welcome addition. The scabbard with some age is becoming floppy but is still sound (good for its age). The sword sheathes and draws well.
Scarce blade. Well worth £600. Please quote item reference AH90. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1905 87 x 13 x 11 (1.272).
