The previous owner researched this sword. Wilkinson serial number 34431; sword finished 28th August 1896. Sold to Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas J. Seppings, the commanding officer of the second King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. We don’t have a copy of the Wilkinson sales ledger confirming this, but one can be bought for £12 from the Royal Armouries if desired.
The 1895 pattern hilt is the predecessor to the still current 1897p but with no folded inner guard section to prevent uniform fraying.
Includes his field service telescope.
The 32 3/8 inch blade is in good condition, the quality Wilkinson etching still very clear, some wear and small patches of patina, firm in the hilt. The steel 1895 pattern hilt / guard with VR Victorian cypher to the cartouche is in very good condition, some minor scuffs etc to the edge. The fishskin grip with a little age and wear is still very good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings (some distortion under the pommel indicative of the sword being wielded, not just held). The leather field service scabbard and frog / straps are good except the chape has come away, clearly from active use. The three draw field telescope is untested.
