First, the sword. Supremely well etched and bearing the logo for Wilkinson Sword, but no serial number. So many opinions on the subject of swords marked to Wilkinson but without serial numbers. From period “fake” by another quality maker eager to appease a customer demanding a Wilkinson, to Wilkinson neglecting to punch a serial number on during the height of WW2, to the officer requesting that no serial number be stamped. We don’t believe another sword maker made it; it has every indication apart from a serial number that it is a Wilkinson made sword.
The included ensemble; sword, knot, scabbard, carry bag, belts, cap.
We found very little on R E C Hill (his name is engraved on the sword’s folding guard), except he served as a midshipman then 2nd lieutenant on Atlantic convoy protection destroyers such as HMS Oribi during WW2. Plenty of research potential!

The supremely well grey etched 31 inch blade is in very good condition, a few specks of patina but nothing much more. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard in good condtion and the folding section works well, locating as it should onto the scabbard’s retaining pin. The original sword knot in good shape. The fishskin grip in good condition, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The scabbard has a little age (black leather fading in places) and a tiny dent to the chape, but is otherwise good. The sword sheathes and draws well. The black all weather carry bag is aged and a little creased but sound. Officer’s cap and belts with some age and a little grubby from wear.
A super set, and all for £800. Please ask for item reference AH87. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1883 102 x 30 x 29 (3.210).
