Poor Gordon didn’t last very long into World War One; he was killed in action in Ypres on the 29th October 1914, his body never found. You can find out more about him and see his picture here (Dorking Museum). The blade bearing his initials, GHB, amongst the battle honours for the Coldstream Guards. The blade bears the Victorian royal cypher, showing he bought this sword when he joined the 3rd Battalion Coldstream Guards in January 1900. He served with the 2nd Battalion Coldstream Guards in the Boer War (1901-02). It is a levee (light weight / slim bladed dress) sword as guards officers carried revolvers, not swords, into battle for many years before.
As the blade is in such good condition and the hilt / scabbard sound, this may well be suitable for refurbishment.
The 32 5/8 inch blade has been professionally re-plated at some stage and is in generally very good condition, protected as it was from damp etc. by the steel scabbard. The blade with VR Victorian royal cypher, plus regimental badge and battle honours for the Coldstream Guards, is firm in the hilt. The plated steel hilt / guard has rust patches but is sound. The fishskin grip is good though aged / faded a little and is a little worn; the twisted grip wire bindings remain good. The plated steel scabbard has multiple rust patches but is good / sound. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A named KIA Coldstream Guards Captain’s sword for just £800; a very good and evocative investment. Please quote item reference AH85. Further/ full sized photos available upon request. Box 1995 (1.303) 102 x 11 x 13
