Dated on the blade’s spine to Klingenthal in February 1820, with correct poinçons at the forte to Bureau, Bick and Lobstein. The forward lip ridge of the guard shows this to be a m1816. It is quite rare in that most m1816 examples you find today have earlier (remounted) An XIII blades (with flat spines) in m1816 hilts, while many true m1816 blades (with rounded spines) ended up in m1822 hilts. THis one, is in really way above average condition but for two things; the brass grip ferrule is missing, as is the lower suspension band on the scabbard; as the French ultimately had only one suspension band / mount, this is likely by choice while still in service.
The almighty 37 3/4 inch plain, twin fuller, spear pointed blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The bright heavy brass guard / hilt is in very good condition. The original leather grip, plus the twisted grip wire bindings are all very good (grip ferule / brass band where grip meets the inside of the guard is missing). The heavy steel scabbard with distinctive lyre drag is in good condition, but lower suspension band removed. The sword sheathes and draws well.
