Converted to a stirrup hilted sword by period removal of outer two bars; perhaps the bars were damaged in battle. This is a Napoleonic / Waterloo era Klingenthal made French An XI light cavalry troopers sabre, dated October 1813 to the blade’s spine, with correct French poinçons for Krantz, Bick and Lobstein. This is either a Dutch war acquisition, or was in Dutch service from when they were allied to Napoleon but then switched to being allied to Britain and Prussia; unfortunately, its history is lost to the winds of time; in any event, the likelihood is that this sword was at Waterloo, not least that the most likely cause of it losing two bars of the once three bar guard is battle damage.
If you look carefully, you can see the section of hilt / guard that the two bard were once a part of; it has been very well done. This stirrup hilt style is more typical to mounted artillery than cavalry, so maybe someone can work out the meaning of the post-French markings “BD 11”, “G6”, “62”; the scabbard’s upper suspension mount has “1” (space) “1”, so it would appear to be the original scabbard.

The 34 1/4 inch blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt and grip. The converted (now stirrup hilt) heavy brass guard is in good condition. The original grip has quite a lot of age and wear with two section patch losses, the largest under the pommel which is where the most force is exerted when wielding such a sword. Both brass grip “olives” in place. The heavy steel scabbard is aged but good. The sword / sabre draws and sheathes well.
If only this sword could tell its history! An evocative bargain buy in any event at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH55. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1817 107x13x13 (2.84)
